Ramón Gómez de la Serna Collection
This collection was purchased by the University of Pittsburgh in 1967, and consists of annotated first editions, clippings, and 60,000 manuscripts by this 20 th century Spanish author. Gómez de la Serna (1888-1963) was a prolific poet, novelist, and essayist. His works, particularly his “Greguerias,” have been widely translated. This collection represents an important resource for the study of modern Spanish literature. An inventory is available.

Chimera was a New York little magazine that published original short stories, poems and essays between 1942 and 1947. It contains a poem by Pablo Neruda “ Spain in the Heart.”

Fantasy Magazine was a little magazine dedicated to free verse, published between 1931 and 1943. In 1942 it started to present a section on Latin American literature. The correspondence it contains relates mainly to the involvement in the project by the Committee on Cultural Relations with Latin America (based in New Haven ); Pan American Union; United States Dept. of State, Division of Cultural Relations, and the U.S. Office of Emergency Management, Coordinator of Inter American Affairs. Also contains the manuscript submissions by authors such as Pablo Neruda and Nicolás Guillén.

Much of this collection is related to an anthology of Latin American poetry edited by Fitts: Anthology of Latin American Poetry / edited by Dudley Fitts. Norwalk , Ct: New Directions, c. 1942, 667 pages. The collection contains galley and page proofs of the poets biographies and bibliographic notes. There are 5 boxes of materials organized alphabetically by poet containing the translated poems.

The Langston Hughes Collection consists of correspondence, writings, photographs and other material documenting the life and work of Langston Hughes. Of interest to Latin American and Caribbean literary scholars is a selection of letters, notes and telegrams exchanged by Hughes and Nicolás Guillén. Much of it deals with Hughes' translation of Guillén's work “Cuba Libre.”

Emir Rodríguez Monegal was a member of the Yale University faculty from 1969 until his death in 1985. He was born in Melo , Uruguay in 1921. He was an expert on Latin American literature and the author of a literary biography of Jorge Luis Borges and several other works. The papers consist of correspondence and subject files related to his professional life as a literary critic and professor in Yale's Spanish and Portuguese Department.
