Working group reports
A. Government documents
Because several LANE members expressed a concern about the labor intensity of the project, the group decided to start with a pilot project that focuses on a small number of countries (e.g. Chile). It was agreed to a) use the "conspectus style" survey, to b) use Godort as a guide, and to c) make an effort to identify major municipalities and other non-federal jurisdictions that are worth collecting. It was also decided that the project will focus on current collections and that international or multinational government bodies will be treated separately from individual countries.
The project seeks to determine the extent to which participating institutions collect Latin American government documents. The objective is to produce a general overview of the regional documents collection that can facilitate the coordination of collecting efforts as well as other types of cooperation among the institutions.B. Web page
The web page (http://www.nyu.edu:80/library/bobst/research/soc/lat-am/lane.htm) includes a statement of purpose; a list of member institutions; a section on initiatives, agreements and on going projects; and minutes. The union list of newspapers is on the web page and already has information on Argentina, Barbados, and Bolivia.
Angela Carreño asked members to verify if the information on your library's collection is correct. She also asked everyone to provide a statement on telephone directories. When Angela goes to Lima, Fernando will continue working on the web page.C. Videos
There was no report on this project because it was discussed in a panel during the conference. A section called 'Video Consortium' appears on LANE's web page. The publication Resources for Locating and Evaluating Latin American Videos, compiled by Angela Carreño and Ramón Abad, is available at the following URL: http://www.library.cornell.edu/colldev/video.html
II. Joint LANE/SALALM workshop
The objective of the workshop is to allow academic and public librarians, as well as any other person who cannot be an active member of SALALM, to learn about the field and take advantage of what we do. The workshop will probably be in the form of a one day seminar.
Angela explained that because of reasons out of her control, she will not be able to make arrangements for a workshop this fall. Perhaps next semester.
